Rotary shaft lip seal are suitable for most applications, particularly the sealing of oil and grease lubricated bearings, made of elastomers, with metal inside or outside. Over the time, many improvements are brought to these seals, in materials and seal design. One of the most important developments is the split seal, which has established itself as an alternative to the endless type. It is specially valuable for applications where glands and shafts must otherwise be dismantled before a moulded endless seal can be fitted. The costs of down-time and maintenance man hours would otherwise prove prohibitive.

Split seals are not a penalty-free option. Their main drawback is a possible reduction in sealing performance where shaft dynamics are severe. In many applications, a small degree of leakage is acceptable. If this is the case, abutting the ends is an acceptable option.
