The first commercial use of a cyclone for separating solids from liquids dates back to 1891 when a patent was issued for a device designed to remove sand from water.Cyclones are still used for that purpose, but the technology has continually improved and the applications list has broadened immeasurably.
Cyclones are economical to acquire, operate, and maintain. They have no moving parts, require minimum operator attention, provide optimal recovery in minimal space, tolerate changes in feed concentration, and need no chemical additives to perform separation processes. Cyclones are used to wash solids, classify solids in liquid suspensions, and degrit liquids. Cyclones are also used as protection or pre-treatment devices to improve the performance and/or decrease the cost of other slurry system equipment such as pumps, valves, centrifuges, filters, and screens. They can be used either individually or in multiple units combined in a manifold for virtually unlimited flowrates while providing high separation efficiency.
The designing of the cyclones is a complex process based on the data send by the customer: density, viscosity, desired concentration in overflow and underflow etc. The hydro-cyclones are used in power industry, petrochemical and chemical industries, treatment and recycling of wastewaters etc.
